The Benefits

Many electricians who join a unionized employer wish they’d made the move sooner. There are great benefits to a unionized career, including:

  • Get paid $59.64 per hour as Journey Worker (JW) electrician and enjoy weekly paydays. Yearly raises are based on our collective agreement, voted and ratified by the members.

  • Get paid 1.5X your regular wages after 8 hours in a day, 40 hours in a week, and all day on Saturdays. Sundays and Holidays are paid at twice your regular wages.

    All Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays are paid at twice your regular wages.

  • Get medical benefits with a 90/10 copay, prescription drugs capped at a $20 copay, life insurance, short and long-term disability, dental coverage, eye care coverage, and all dependents covered at no cost to the member.

  • JW electricians can make over $15,000 per year in pension contributions, paid fully by the employer on top of your wage. You are eligible to retire and claim your Local pension at 60 years of age, and your international pension at 62 years of age.

  • All the safety training is free to members. More information can be found at ibew625.ca/Education/Safety-Courses

  • IBEW Local 625’s contractors currently have over a decade of work booked and plan to hire more than 400 JW electricians over the next 18 months. As a unionized JW, you enjoy representation from a union to protect you from employers.

  • Enjoy recreational events such as Christmas dinners and dances, golf tournaments, hockey tournaments, bowling events, ski days, dart tournaments, pool tournaments, axe throwing, shark fishing, family days at parks such as Splashifax and Atlantic Playland, Moosehead games, and more.

    At the Local, where you can meet other members and help the community such as NextGen Committee for members under 35, Women’s Committee and Veteran’s Committee, amongst many others.  

  • Additional technical training taught by industry professionals is available for free to members. These courses are accredited, and hours count toward an apprenticeship. Find more information at ibew625.ca/JATC-Courses

    • As a unionized JW electrician, all your power tools and your safety gear (except for steel toe boots) are provided by the employer. 

    • As a JW electrician, you will have the opportunity to travel to other provinces (this is optional and never mandatory).

When do I get medical benefits and what do they include?

After 390 hours worked you become what is called “in benefit.” We have a 90/10 copay. Some highlights of our benefits, as well as our full coverage book, can be found here. All dependents can be covered for no additional cost.

When can I start work?

IBEW Local 625 currently has unfilled job calls. A JW Electrician could start as soon as next week after joining the Local IBEW 625 Union.
