Make sooner now.

It’s time you enjoy the benefits of unionized electrical work.

Many Nova Scotian electricians who join a unionized employer wish they’d made the move sooner.

The Benefits

Many electricians who join a unionized employer wish they’d made the move sooner. Here are some of the great benefits that only a unionized career can give you.

  • Get paid $59.64 an hour as Journey Worker (JW) electrician with weekly paydays. Yearly raises are based on our collective agreement, voted and ratified by the members.

    See Wage Rates

  • Get paid 1.5X your regular wages after 8 hours in a day, 40 hours in a week, and all day on Saturdays. Sundays and holidays are paid at twice your regular wages.

  • Get medical benefits with a 90/10 copay, prescription drugs capped at a $20 copay, life insurance, short and long-term disability, dental coverage, eye care coverage, and all dependents covered at no cost to the member.

    More Medical Benefits

  • JW electricians can make over $15,000 per year in pension contributions, paid fully by the employer on top of your wages. You are eligible to retire and claim your local pension at 60 years of age, and your international pension at 62 years of age.

  • Ongoing safety training is free to members. No wonder Canadian studies show that unionized workplaces have fewer injuries and a stronger safety culture than non-union ones. More information can be found at ibew625.ca/Education/Safety-Courses

  • IBEW Local 625’s contractors currently have over a decade of work booked and plan to hire more than 400 JW electricians over the next 18 months. Plus, as a unionized JW, you enjoy representation from a union when conflicts arise with employers.

  • As a union member, you’re part of a close-knit community that supports one another on and off the job. From family-friendly events to team tournaments and seasonal celebrations, there are opportunities to connect, relax, and build friendships.

Members also contribute through committees that foster leadership, inclusion, and mentorship, such as the NextGen Committee, Women’s Committee, and Veterans’ Committee.

  • Additional technical training, taught by industry professionals, is provided for free to members. These courses are accredited, and hours count toward an apprenticeship.

    Course Information

    • As a unionized JW electrician, all your power tools and your safety gear (except for steel toe boots) are provided by the employer.

    • As a JW electrician, you’ll have the opportunity to travel to other provinces (this is optional and never mandatory).

    • Enjoy privileged access to some of the largest jobs in the province and the country.

Find work that fits your life, not the other way around.

When do I get medical benefits and what do they include?

Unionized electricians share their story

“If I had joined the union right out of school, I could retire in my late forties.”

—-Tyler, electrician, 34 years old

“I think people aren’t joining from an old school mentality. The people who never joined don’t know how much better it is to have pension and health and dental package or a company truck with gas card and proper wages.”

—-Taylor, electrician, 31 years old

“I have great community, worker protection, and, of course, more money, a great pension, health benefits for myself and my family.”

—-Chasen, electrician, 28 years old
